Highlands, NC is a quaint little town surrounded by the Nantahala National Forest and situated atop a plateau at elevation 4118 ft. With fine dining, comfortable accommodations, high end shopping, and a stones throw to hiking, biking, golf and more… It’s easy to see why Southern Living chose Highlands as a top 5 Small Town Getaway.

This is the first of a 4 part series.

The first thing I wanted to share was where to stay.

After following a winding road leading to the top of the mountain, the first impression of The Highlands is this…

Not too shabby right?

As you can see, there are plenty of rental homes available on the waterfront. Prices and sizes range accordingly.

There are several hotels right in town. The Highlands provides many different hotels, inns, and B&B’s. There are even pet friendly choices if you don’t want to leave home home without Fido. For the purpose of this post, I will be reviewing the Old Edwards Inn & Spa. The Old Edwards Inn & Spa sits atop the scenic southwest plateau of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Surrounded by pristine mountains with lakes, streams, and waterfalls, Old Edwards with it’s rustic old world charm is the perfect place to relax, gather with friends or family, and pamper yourself. It is located in the heart of the town and is steps away from live music, boutique shopping, and fine dining. The architecture of the sprawling property is second to none.
